The Gulag Within is a contemporary choral work composed and written by Santiago Kodela, featured on Voices of Earth & Air, Vol. III (Navona Records, NV6299). Among the most modernist pieces on the album, it explores the psychological dimensions of confinement and the limits we impose upon ourselves, internally rather than externally. Through stark harmonic language and a sense of inexorable progression, the piece reflects on the internal struggles of the human condition, challenging both listener and performer to confront discomfort and isolation.
