Dublin: in a city of layers, future overlaid on present, past echoes resonate faintly, surprisingly. Beneath the gleam of the new, some relics remain, weakened but still intact, people and places both. The old basement rehearsal space on North Frederick St was one such site – in existence beyond historical 'scene memory', forever there; dingy, damp, unlovely perhaps, but always cheap, welcoming, open. Home to many bands over the years, some known briefly by the outer world, most forgotten. Last bastion of a lost fight, it closed its doors for the final time recently, another sacrifice to development.
