This album has its origins in the enforced stillness of the Covid lockdowns. Finding himself with unexpected time on his hands, Séamus Ó Rócháin returned to the dance tune collections gathered in the border counties of Louth, Monaghan and Armagh – the ancient territory once known as Oriel, or Airgíalla. Playing through these tunes alone on his uilleann pipes, he began to hear the outlines of an album: music from a place and time largely forgotten in today's sessions and concert halls, but preserved in the painstaking work of collectors like Patrick McGahon and Luke Donnellan. Oriel was a medieval Irish kingdom straddling what is now the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
