The group that became Morphogenesis was at first a larger pool of musicians, drawn from students who attended Roger Sutherland's New Music course at City University. We began to meet regularly at Morley College from January 1985, to play and record text pieces and graphic scores, such as 'Stones' by Christian Wolff. After a few months, the line-up settled down to the original core of five musicians, and we adopted the name Morphogenesis (influenced by Rupert Sheldrake and his theory of Formative Causation). We also found a new home at West Square Electronic Music Studio, thanks to the generosity of Barry Anderson. At the same time, we moved from doing text scores to improvisation.
