Tabula chordae studies documents the earliest explorations of a self-built string instrument: a hollow-bodied, twin-neck table steel developed as both instrument and process. Conceived in response to a growing disenchantment with the familiarity of the electric guitar, the instrument was designed to remain close enough to feel instinctive while introducing new physical and musical possibilities. The name Tabula Chordae was chosen - a Latin-inspired phrase intended to evoke a "surface of strings". Adopted to distinguish it from the traditions of both the electric guitar and the conventional lap steel.
