LOST VOICES Ian Wilson Lotte Betts-Dean Ensemble Musikfabrik LOST VOICES ("Voces amissae") is a single, 50-minute work for mezzo-soprano, cello, three violas, and two percussionists, exploring ways in which voices can be lost—through social marginalization, political oppression, personal circumstance or medical conditions. At its heart lies an investigation into the minutiae of sound, continuing Ian Wilson’s long-standing interest in delicate, nuanced musical textures and the mechanics of producing pianissimo. Originally conceived for Dutch soprano Nora Fischer, the project gained a poignant resonance because Fischer herself was at that point experiencing difficulties with her own voice.
