Deep focus, ritual and stillness – these signatures of composer Garrett Sholdice's music run through this intensely luminous collection of music for voice and piano. This sensibility will be resonant with anyone familiar with Sholdice’s recent music, but it can be traced right back to the composer's childhood in Dublin singing as a cathedral chorister. Composed over a period of more than fifteen years, the songs on Still is the Night reflect a sharpening sense of spareness, of paring back and releasing the essence of Sholdice's material. “As a composer I am drawn to what is simple, almost mundane,” says Sholdice.
