Practicing an instrument is an important discipline in my book, but I suspect the citizens whose homes were on fire didn’t see it that way. There’s a time and a place, they’d have said. Please help us put the fire out. Whether he fiddled or not, the phrase ‘while Rome burns’ came to mean doing something trivial and irresponsible in the midst of an emergency. That’s where we are now.
