"Dreary Eden" is a famous phrase coined by Irish author Seán Ó Faoláin in his 1939 biography of political leader Éamon de Valera. It described the restrictive, economically depressed, and culturally puritanical society of mid-20th-century Ireland. Ó Faoláin criticised the conservative, church-dominated theocracy and state censorship that stifled intellectual and artistic expression. The era was defined by economic stagnation, mass emigration, and strict social conformity, which forced many writers and intellectuals to either fight the system or flee abroad.
